Meet Dr. Pamela Mehta – Good Feet Medical Advisor

Written by The Good Feet Team  •  Last Updated: Apr 13, 2022

Pamela Mehta, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of sports injuries and joint arthritis. A skilled surgeon, Dr. Mehta's compassion for her patients and commitment to her field have earned her numerous accolades, including being named the Chief of Orthopedics and National Orthopedic Director for Surgical Affiliates Management Group.

Dr. Mehta founded her private practice, Resilience Orthopedics, in San Jose, California, after five years as an orthopedic surgeon with a large managed care organization. Having her own practice enables Dr. Mehta to care for her patients on a concierge level.

She focuses on surgery of the shoulders, knees, hips, hands, and foot and ankle and is passionate about getting her patients back to their active lifestyles. In addition to her clinical practice, she advises several medical companies and startups.

The Good Feet Store is honored to partner with Dr. Mehta as our medical advisor to evaluate and help improve the efficacy of our products.

Orthopedic Surgery and Foot Health

Always good at science, Dr. Mehta held a deep desire to use her skills to help others. She initially thought of becoming a primary care physician, but when she stepped into the operating room for her trauma rotation at the University of Southern California, she discovered orthopedics was her calling. Dr. Mehta immediately loved the idea of physically repairing a patient's injury.

She says, "Orthopedic surgery is the perfect fit for me: it's a great mix of seeing patients in the office, small procedures, and large operations. For the most part my patients want to resume an active lifestyle – whether that's a grandparent wanting to garden or play with their grandchildren, or an athlete getting back to their sport. It is a passion of mine to help people remain active and perform better for longer."

Foot health is essential for overall health, says Dr. Mehta. "Our feet and ankles are the pillars of our body. Our total body alignment, gait and proper mechanics of our lower body joints are dictated by good foot health. The way our foot is positioned can relieve pain and aches in the ankles, knees, hips and lower back."

Empowering Future Generations Through Social Media

Can a woman have both a career and a family? Today the answer is: of course.

Yet when Dr. Mehta applied for her first orthopedic position just a decade ago, she got a rude awakening.

During her job interview she was asked, "Do you plan on having children?" Although this is an illegal hiring question, she wanted the prestigious position, so she said yes. And she soon experienced gender, racial, and pregnancy discrimination on the job. In fact, her employer attempted to force her out of her position when she became pregnant with her second child.

Dr. Mehta had the last laugh, however: she hired a lawyer, launched her private practice, and began publicizing her story on social media. In sharing her story as a woman in a male dominated field (only 6% percent of orthopedic surgeons are female), her social media platforms quickly pivoted into a women's empowerment forum, allowing her to advise others on how to face obstacles and continue to persevere.

Dr. Mehta also co-founded Pinnacle Conference, the first multi-specialty conference dedicated to giving professional women in medicine the tools they need to reach the pinnacle of leadership, negotiation, and life-balancing skills.

How Good Feet Arch Supports Can Help

As Good Feet's medical advisor, Dr. Mehta says, "Arch support is imperative for preventing foot, ankle, knee, hip, and back pain. Shoes that have no support at the arch are going to exacerbate pain and inflammation along the inside of the foot and ankle.

"With the foot arches and heels supported appropriately, the knees, hips and low back will be in appropriate alignment, which can diminish inflammation, aches and pains in those joints. When the pillars of our body — the feet — are not in good alignment, or don't have the appropriate support, it can cause a cascade of pain traveling up the medial aspect of your leg into the knees, hips and low back.

"Good Feet Arch Supports can provide arch support to the foot arch as well as comfort to the heel and forefoot, thereby relieving unnecessary pressure on the medial aspect of the ankles, shins and knees. They can also help with relieving low back pain that may be caused by poor biomechanics and altered gait from misaligned arches in the foot."
