Well+Good – June 19, 2021 – “Finding summer shoes for flat feet can be challenging since most simple sandals, flip flops, and slip-on sneakers don't offer much arch support. But it's the most important thing to look for in a shoe if you have this condition, which over eight million adults in the United States do, according to the Institute for Preventative Foot Health.
"It's a condition in which the foot does not have a normal arch while standing, and often the arches on the inside of the feet are so flattened that the entire sole of the foot touches the floor," explains Pamela Mehta, MD, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and a medical advisor to The Good Feet Store. Flat feet can be genetic, caused by injury or arthritis, or a result of wear and tear on the tendon that runs along the inside of your ankle.
No matter how you've come to have flat feet, the key to shoe shopping is to find a pair that will keep your foot supported, maintain proper alignment all the way up your spine and throughout your body, and prevent pain and inflammation along the inside of your soles, heels, ankles, shins, and knees.
The best summer shoes for flat feet will tick all of the boxes above, but also be breathable and, well, cute. And spotting them will be so much easier if you know what to look for, and what to look out for, assures Dr. Mehta…”
